What Is LUFS, and Why Your Podcast Needs Loudness Normalization
You cleaned up the noise, but something's still off: one episode blares while the last one whispered, or your voice jumps between quiet and loud within the same recording. Listeners reach for the volume knob. That's not a noise problem — it's a loudness problem, and the fix has a name: LUFS normalization.
LUFS (Loudness Units Full Scale) measures how loud audio actually sounds to a person, over time — not just its peaks. Normalizing to a target LUFS makes every episode play back at a consistent, comfortable level. Aim for about −16 LUFS for podcasts and −14 LUFS for streaming/YouTube, with true peaks kept at or below −1 dBTP.
What LUFS actually means
LUFS stands for Loudness Units relative to Full Scale. It's a standardized measurement of perceived loudness — an approximation of how loud something sounds to human ears, averaged over time and weighted for the frequencies we're most sensitive to. It's written as a negative number: 0 LUFS is the ceiling, and more negative means quieter. A podcast at −16 LUFS sounds noticeably louder than one at −24 LUFS.
Why it matters for podcasts and video
Every major platform now normalizes loudness on playback — Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube all target roughly −14 to −16 LUFS. If your file is far from that, the platform turns it up or down, sometimes unevenly, and your careful mix isn't what listeners hear. Normalize it yourself and you get three things:
- Consistency across episodes — no volume jump between last week's and this week's.
- Comfort — listeners aren't riding the volume knob mid-episode.
- Predictable playback — you land where the platforms expect, so nothing gets mangled.
LUFS vs peak level — they're not the same
A common mix-up: peak level is the single loudest instant in the file; LUFS is how loud the whole thing feels. You can have a recording that peaks near the top yet sounds quiet overall, or one that feels loud but never peaks hard. You need both numbers: LUFS to hit a consistent perceived loudness, and a true-peak ceiling (typically −1 dBTP) to make sure raising the loudness doesn't push peaks into clipping.

- Podcasts: about −16 LUFS (mono) / −16 to −14 LUFS (stereo).
- YouTube & streaming video: about −14 LUFS.
- Spotify / Apple Podcasts playback: roughly −14 to −16 LUFS.
- True-peak ceiling: keep at or below −1 dBTP to avoid clipping.
Close counts — within a LU or two of the target is fine. The goal is consistency, not a magic number.

Does loudness normalization hurt audio quality?
